I went with solar 2 1/2 years ago.  My electric bill has went down from 500 a month to about 30.00.  I am looking for back up batteries, but they were so expensive at the time, when I put them in that will save that 30.00 (night use).  Both years so far I have gotten a credit to my account for my unused energy that went back into the system, at then end of the year.  My system (solar) makes more than we use a lot of the time.  The rebates I received from the federal and state governments paid for a new roof and a big chunk of the solar system installation and panels.  I pay 50.00 a month for the bill for the system, so we are way ahead with having the solar.  Plus the company I bought it through gives me $500.00 every time I recommend a person who goes with them.  I always put that on my solar bill so it will be paid off shortly, so that will save another 50.00 a month.  We have also invested in a nest thermostat which I can program to drop the temperature at night or when we are away and turn everything back on just before we get home..    You would only not be involved with electirc company if you had back up batteries for night, but our night usage is very minimal.

I've heard from people who work for solar companys that the cost of keeping the equipment up and running is higher long term then paying for electric long term. Hearing that has totally turned me off of even trying this.

So far in two years, we have only had to hose the panels off, nothing else as far as maintenance.
