I have both good and bad neighbors to different degrees. But today I did something that some may consider crossing the line, but I will do it again in a heartbeat... The house across the street from us has a decent sized yard as compared to the rest of the neighborhood. We have no front lawn - only a back lawn. Our front is fenced in and is all flowers, mulch, and magnolia tree - no grass to cut. The neighbor to the left has a small strip of grass along the street/sidewalk that runs right up to our driveway. The neighbor to the right has a small front lawn and they own/maintain the narrow strip of grass in between our houses.
The house across the street was foreclosed a few years ago and has been vacant since. The new owner comes by on a regular basis to cut the grass, but doesn't live there. Most of the yard is fenced in, but there is a decent sized patch that is outside of the fence and along the street. Yesterday I could hear that neighbor out cutting the grass and then later using a leaf blower, cleaning off the sidewalk along the street outside of her fence. Today there was a considerable amount of cut grass on my side of the street gutter and on my driveway and sidewalk - which could only have come from the house across the street - whose sidewalk and street gutter were pristine. (The neighbors on each side of us always clean up after mowing their strips of grass and the one to the left always blows off anything that gets onto our driveway back into their lawn - so I know it was not either of them).
We also have the option to pay to have yard waste collected by the city. It is not an automatic citywide service, but we are signed up to have ours picked up each week on a Friday. So my yard waste container was out this morning for pick up. I swept up our sidewalk and driveway and the street gutter but instead of depositing it into our yard waste container - I walked it across the street and dumped it into the yard from which it came - over the fence. I could have easily put it into my own yard waste container, since I was already doing a good bit of weeding in our flower bed, but I didn't feel like contributing her yard waste into my paid for pickup.
If anyone saw me or if the neighbor has surveillance cameras, I suppose I could be charged with littering. But is it really littering when you are just returning the debris to the source? It's one thing to have a tree's leaves blown by the wind into a neighboring yard, but (in my opinion) something completely different when someone actually uses a leaf blower to blow away leaves or grass and doesn't bother to clean it up and properly dispose of it.
