career choices

Honestly, I believe in taking a job you enjoy.  There is no point in working at a place you hate if you hate the work you are doing as well.

    After years of hard work, I got my degree in Business Administration.
And work for many years in "white collar jobs". Then, the jobs were not there
anymore. Because of the decline in certain jobs due to automation- "displacement
by technology", I became a blue collar worker. A truck driver, a janitor...and many
more, allowed me to earn a paycheck in a regular basis. And I was happier to be out
doors, avoiding the 8-5 routine in an office shuffling papers.
     Careers choices are important. Two factors are: A regular paycheck and job advancement opportunities.

I just got off the phone with a friend who has been an airline pilot for a few decades. My friend felt confident that, even at my age, he could get me up and flying within a year. I called an old client that runs a flight school and he could cut my costs down considerably for all licensing (he had promised to give me lessons for free because I had helped his son out in a business situation for free). I have a call into a college mate that owns an air field and several planes in the Miami, Florida area so that I can get some flight hours in. I also contacted an old co-worker, who moved over to working at a nearby airport, about keeping his eyes out for a flight instructor position (for me). The timing is pretty good because my second job sent an e-mail about reducing hours to eight per day and cutting overtime ($25,000 lost) due to the new tax bill. The new tax bill has added exemptions for the maintenance of luxury jets which should create new jobs in the private aircraft field. One door closes and another opens!

Careers are good for some people, and some people are just content/happy with any job. My sister, for instance, wants to go to college to study psychology; I, on the other hand, am not interested in college at all, and just want a job with animals, and to do my writing.

I want a career were I can be my own boss & earn a decent living.

I think it is great if you can get a job doing something that you like, but sometimes life happens and you just need a job to pay the bills. I think it is good to have skills that are flexible in case you do not land your dream job.

   Skills acquired are transferable.
   They go with you any place you go.
   You can use them when you need them.

I was going to be a flight attendant (When I was 9) A "I'm never going to work in a wal'mart" comment has turned a hobby into a career for me.  I love it - wouldn't have it any other way. Been blessed to work in a retail store that I love as it has the small family school compared to that of the old grocery store I worked at in high schoool.

Sometimes it works out that you accidentally land what you love to do.  That's what happened to my husband.  He's a correctional officer in a maximum security prison.  It's really rough on him but he actually loves what he does.

I absolutely love the types of things that I do in the field I am going in, but I really am not enjoying where I am doing it right now, but I can't afford to switch jobs until this summer.

One thing confuses me about people's career choices.  People look for something that pays well and something they like doing.  Of course a ton of people don't really go for those things.  But for those who do look for something that gives them financial freedom...why would they not look for something that gives them time freedom.  Financial freedom is not very useful without time freedom.

I never finished college because I refused to live with my mother after high school and found it hard to make ends meet and go to college at the same time. Of course, when I was college aged, not as many high school graduates went to college like they do now. But I found out soon enough that I had to settle for the clerical jobs I was able to get. I've taught my boys that if you do well in school, go to college for your dream job (STEM), then you can make good choices and not have to settle for second (and third) best.
