EATING IN THE FIFTIES
« on: February 27, 2017, 12:31:25 pm »

Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.

Curry was a surname.

A take-away was a mathematical problem.

Pizza? Sounds like a leaning tower somewhere.

Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.

All chips were plain.

Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.

Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.

Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.

Chickens didn't have fingers in those days.

None of us had ever heard of yogurt.

Healthy food consisted of anything edible.

Cooking outside was called camping.

Seaweed was not a recognized food.

'Kebab' was not even a word, never mind a food.

Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold.

Prunes were medicinal.

Surprisingly muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.

Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one.

Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock.

The three things that we never ever had on/at our table in the fifties...was elbows, hats and cell phones!

all of it so true, and we  put our elbows on the table it was whack to get them off, Respect was  what we grew up with.
I will say though when we moved to Ohio it was a rude awakening for us. We were used to eating Mexican food of all kinds and they did not even know what it was. My grandpa had to ship us our green chile,  our pinto beans and Masa for tamales. Boy it was hard. When we moved back to N.M.  I thought we would OD on Mexican food the first year. But we didn't we lived.

I think we had bananas and oranges  year round. Can think of a few more no eggos or pita pockets .No kid had peanut allergies . no micrpwave,  no coffee pods . There is more to need to get coffee made in a regular maker.

Haha! I love these.  ;D Lots of good/funny points made. I would so like to travel back in time and spend at least a week in the fifties. Have always loved the era.

I remember we had a milk man who came once a week to our house, with a cool milk truck! Our milk was in bottles made of glass and if we wern't home you left your list and money in the little silver box on the steps. And when we got home there was our stuff.  Now days  the cash and the box would be gone, and the milk man tied up on the bushes and his truck missing as well... :o
