I have heard that docs are now leaning more towards ice. The way i understood it basically is that heat is inflammatory, makes blood go to the area, exacerbates pain, etc. I dont know though, i always lean towards heat when i am sore, maybe i have been doing it wrong all these years.
maybe you should try alternating ice and heat.

I have degenerated disc aka ddd & my doctor recommends heat for a bit then ice packs & switch throughout the day when I am in pain.

I had to use a heating pad last week because I went to my grandson's basketball game and when I stepped down I pulled a muscle in the back of my leg.

I use a heating pad when my back pain flares up intense. I also have a HoMedics Vibroback heat with massage vibrating cushion. If my pain isn't real bad, I use a hand held infrared item with optional vibration.

I bought a large heating pad with some $$ I got for Christmas. Sooooo glad I did. It is going a long way to healing and relieving my pinched sciatic nerve, and thus the knee, back etc.

Heat isn't a very effective way of dealing with pain. Icing and cold will be a better idea.
