Adults with CIP?

Do you know of anyone with CIP (congenital insensitivity to pain) who managed to reach and survive adolescence? I find that really hard to imagine because CIP is a really nasty condition that probably doesn't develop later in life. In my opinion, CIP isn't supposed to develop after birth. Nobody with CIP I know of feels any pain at all and therefore has no way of knowing about physical harm. I think everyone who has CIP winds up killing himself or herself from a severe injury while he or she is still seriously young.

Wow, that's so sad! I never knew there was this type of condition and how it affects people in such a negative way.

I saw a documentary about this condition once and it was very scary.  We don't realize what a USEFUL and beneficial thing physical pain is.  It serves a real purpose.  If I remember the show correctly.  There was a young girl of a few years old with the condition and she was blind as a result of pressing her hands into her eyes as a baby.  It didn't hurt, so she didn't know not to do it.  I think there was another older child/young adult who had to set an alarm timer to remind him/her to use the bathroom -- couldn't feel the pressure put on a full bladder.


Sometimes when I stub my toe or cut my finger, I think it would be nice if this pain would just go away.  But we are really blessed that we can actually feel that pain.

I've never heard of CIP before. I hope they find a cure for it someday.

For those of you who say CIP should be cured, I totally agree. Even cancer is less serious than any inability to feel pain (unless CIP caused the cancer).

Yes the pain we feel keeps us from harm. To not feel pain is not good for people to say the least.

The next time I get a paper cut I'm going to remind myself of those who suffer from CIP.  I had never heard of this condition either.  I have a 9 year old that complains about the slightest scratch..  Can't wait to explain the gift of pain we've been given since some can't experience it.
