I have always found that compensation has a direct correlation to contribution.  The harder you work the more money that you make.  The hard work doesn't need to be at your job...sometimes extra curricular activities can increase your income. Taking extra classes to enhance your intelligence within the field or give you a better knowledge base when managing people or developing a project. Making helpful suggestions that can increase productivity is another way of getting noticed for a raise. Helping others in your department can sometimes show that you have leadership skills and primes you for a higher salary. creating a need for you within the company is a good way to get a raise. Approach your boss and ask him/her how you can be of more benefit to the company and possibly make more money.

Do you know how much you could make in similar position at another company? That's something that is always good to know when asking for a raise.

Back in January, my boss gave me a $1500/yr raise. I wanted more than that, so I went and talked to him. I gave him so figures, talked about the added responsibilities I had undertaken, and he gave me an additional $6,000/yr. He pretty much agreed with what I said, and that he had given it some thought on giving me a bigger raise to begin with. Sometimes you just need to show the initiative.
Wow! That is a HUGE raise! I got a big raise ($3.00 more an hour) this past spring, but I didn't have to ask for it. It was automatic when I reached to top of my level.

Well, for starters I would make sure to be an excellent employee. Make sure you arrive on time every day, and only call in sick when you truly need to. Reliability is a great quality in any employee. Also, always have a positive attitude. If you make others happy, you will be even more appreciated! Lastly, always work your hardest, and let it show in your work and performance. Then asking for a raise should not be out of the question, after all you are a valuable employee and your employer will feel more inclined to acquiesce to your request! Hope this helps! Good luck!

I would say it depends on how long you have worked for the company and the type of job it is. Some companies automatically give you a raise every so often.
