Minor Accident
« on: June 04, 2014, 07:17:47 am »
So the other morning, I tapped a car in the parking lot (he was backed in and parked over the line and I underestimated by how much). I left a note on the car with my name and insurance info and phone number... How long does it take for someone to call??? I'm on pins and needles wondering how much this is going to cost me :(

My car has been hit more times than I can count and no one has ever left their information, so not sure what I would do in that situation.

Stressed.

did you call your insurance company if not then i would wait a few days no more then a week and if this person doesn't not call you it probably means he doesn't have insurance or try to find out from  someone who he is and where he lives and write him a letter or if you can get a phone number hope this helps i had this happen to me a couple of times and it turns out that the person doesn't have insurance

I agree call your insurance company in a few days no more then that. If this person doesn't call it usually means that he or she is driving with insurance.

I would not be overly concerned about this, especially if I took pictures of any 'damage' that was done. Sadly some folks will try to take advantage of the 'good guys' that fess up to a boo-boo. So, if you do get a call, casually hint/mention that you there are photos of the matter (even if you don't). :) You don't need to flat out lie, but kind of indicate that there is 'evidence' at hand of some type, a witness, pics, whatever...

perhaps you could call your insurance and see if there was a claim made on it? i would think if they'd contacted the police then you'd have received a call by now

Ahhh I remember my first car accident 2 years ago at college... I unbraked my car to go forward because I expected the car to turn when there is no cars passing... It was slightly downhill when I unbraked so I hit the car in front of me... The car infront of me didn't have a dent but it broke of my front grill... The girl I hit was pretty nice and ask me if I was okay... I made the mistake of telling her that it was 100% my fault (since I heard to never admit fault and just report the accident).. I later called my insurance company who said that they will cover the cost of any damages, if she reports it to them (but of course I have a higher deductible)... Now I have experience on what I should do when I get in a car accident.

That was pretty nice of you to leave your contact information, some people never write anything when they scratch or bump a car...If it's minor some people wave it off since they don't want to do the hassle of reporting it (if its not a big deal to them).. Happen to my dad one time in a school's parking lot... Just make sure you report it to your insurance company.. They will help/advise you... Insurance will cover the damage to the other car, but you will pay a higher deductible in your car insurance... You might get lucky if your car insurance have a "accidental forgiveness" and wave it off for you

This is why I always park far away from other cars in parking lots.

I definitely agree that you did the right thing but I also agree that there are people that take advantage of the good people in this world so I would hint that you have a witness or pictures of the damage. The waiting is worse than the coping with it. If ther was very little damage then you may never hear from them.

Hey who knows, maybe he figured the damage wasn't that bad, or knew he was parked over the line and didn't want to pursue it. If he hasn't called you in regards to it, I wouldn't worry about it. You did the right thing by leaving your info, it's up to him now to take it further!

I do have pictures of it, it is a private lot but I would not have any way of finding out the owner as I don't work in the building. I have seen the car every day since, and still have not received a call. He also has not parked over the line since...

Also - to the person that stated - "This is why I always park far away from other cars in parking lots" - you clearly don't have to park in a big city where all the spaces are tiny and lots are crowded. *bleep* happens, and I just thought it was strange that the person has not called me or my insurance company. again, whether THEY have insurance or not would seem irrelevant, right?

You did the right thing, sadly mist people don't do that.  I would call your insurance company to see if a claim was made.  You didn't say if there was much damage to his car.  Maybe there was only a scratch or minor ding and he's going to let it go and do nothing.
