Have you ever heard of a John Wayne casserole?

Never heard of it but might be willing to try it.  I know my husband would want to try it since its named after his all time favorite actor and all around good guy!

I looked it up. It is a one dish taco casserole. Looks kind of beige but I bet it tastes good.

never heard of it, so I googled it, I looked at 5 recipes all about the same, that say it has

cheddar cheese
jack cheese
diced chilies
eggs
stewed tomatoes

The day I saw this dish, it didn't look like a macaroni & cheese dish.  It resembled a bread pudding and I do recall something red in the dish, but it didn't look all that appetizing to me.  I am a fan of John Wayne, especially in the movie "Hatari", but I was like Dwayne on "What's Happening!!":  uh-unh!

I asked around and was given this (below).  See if it sounds right:

JOHN WAYNE CASSEROLE

2 (4 oz.) cans unseeded, chopped chilies
1 lb. shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 lb. shredded Cheddar
1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 sliced tomato
1 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 med. onion, chopped
4 eggs, separated

Mix 2 cheese together with chilies and put into buttered 9 x 13
inch dish. Beat egg whites until stiff. In a separate bowl mix
egg yolks, milk, flour, salt, pepper and onion until blended.
Gently fold in beaten egg whites and pour over cheeses. Bake 30
minutes at 325 degrees. Put tomato slice on top and bake another
15 minutes.

Thanks Tea4Me, that sounds tasty.  I never heard of this before this feed.  Looks rather like a southwestern quiche, to me.  She thought it had meat and or sausage in it.  That would be good.  Maybe the cook modified it.  I wonder how it got it's name.
