i can imagine.  my son has a friend that was in an accident that broke most of the bones in his body. he's been in the hospital almost 2 weeks now, with four surgeries...would be terrified to see his bill.

This is not a big deal.  Sounds like he just got a dose of reality.  I had to have a knot taken out of my arm.
Wasn't that big but ended up it was inside of the nerve.  It was over $10,000 and that was about 15 years ago.

And he is 20.  He is not a kid.  He is an adult.  I don't even see how at 20 he is on his father's insurance.  I thought it was HIS insurance.  He needs to be thankful he has insurance.  A lot of people do not and cannot get it (no matter what the friggin government tries to say) and can't have needed surgery.

Was the accident his fault?  If it was the other driver then HE won't be responsible for the bill.  The person who caused it will have to pay it.  And he should have (even if it was his fault) have auto insurance that will pay even if he doesn't have health insurance.  But you are right the bill will be outrageous.
