Pop Ups on computer!!?!?!?!
« on: November 15, 2013, 07:11:45 am »
How do you get rid of pop ups?

Just this week, my computer seems to be jumping to a new tab or window about every other click I do!!!

Frustrating!!

I went to Control Panel to see if I have anything there that looks out of place....but I am not very techy so I cannot see anything there.

Thanks in advance for any tips....

If you are using Internet Explorer, just go to Tools at top left, then Internet Options, then the Privacy tab. Then click on the box that says Turn On Pop-Up Blocker, then Apply, then exit.

If you still get a lot of pop-ups after doing that, you may have a virus. In that case, I suggest you download Malwarebytes software from malwarebytes.com and do a scan for viruses.

Hope that helps.

Adblock plus can help with this issue. It is a very effective tool when it comes to blocking popups and ads.It installs on your browser is very effective.. The only downfall would be you would have to remember to turn your adblock off when doing video's because some of the video's require you to not have the adblocker on or they will not load. If you don't have a virus scanner i would get one..and do a full scan. If you installed something recently and do have a virus scanner i would deffinetly scan it to make sure it's not infected or got infected. You want to make sure you double check the programs on your computer and maybe even a third time because sometimes they will hide in the programs. If not then check any of your browser extentions or addons. Make sure nothing got installed on any of those.. because sometimes you will get  an extra toolbar or extention installed and you don't really notice.. and it can slow down your computer or bring up a bunch of popups. alwyas make sure anything you install you scan with a virus scanner because anything could contain a virus or infection and when it spreads through your computer it may or may not always be easy to remove and could wind up costing lots of money in repairs

Run an anti-virus (like AVAST!) to check for viruses.  Let me also suggest that if you don't have an anti-virus on your machine, you should because you're leaving yourself wide open to viruses, hi-jacks and bots.  AVAST! is NOT a "resource hog" like a lot of anti-virus software can be.  AVAST! is a FREE anti-virus and is a great choice.

After running an anti-virus, you should run Malwarebytes (which will check your system for trojans, malware, spyware and malicious code).  These are different from viruses and the reason why you SHOULD have an anti-virus running on your machine at all times.

Avast download (choose the FREE one):  www.avast.com

Malwarebytes download (also choose the FREE version):  www.malwarebytes.org

Don't worry that both of these programs are "free."  They are two of the best you can get in the "free" category and you won't be disappointed.  Good luck!

I found an add on extension that was a main culprit.  Thanks to minioncookies for suggesting I look there.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials as my virus protection as that is what the guy who has serviced my computer before told me was good.  He said I don't need avast or avg or norton.  I haven't paid for those.

My husband had paid for a service that will do a complete diagnostic checkup on our computers....so I did that.

I am confused though about virus vs malware.  Are they one and the same thing or are they different things?   Do you need a "malware" protection plan that is separate from the "virus" protection?

Well first of all I'd suggest doing a Adware, malware and virus scan and if that doesn't fix it I would highly recommend downloading Google Chrome and AdBlock it's quite useful. That or also check your extensions / addons / tool bars because sometimes those can cause this to happen and even slow down your browsers speed.
