have you ever read a book so captivating that you keep saying "wow" as you read what happens to the fictional characters?

When I was reading the Game of Thrones for the first time, I was actually struck speechless when one of the main characters was killed... After that, I knew that that series was very serious about letting the chips fall where they may, so to speak. Too often, the main characters somehow always manage to survive... Like in the movies when the bad guys will fire off an entire clip without even hitting the protagonist. But this series went completely against that formula and really caught me by surprise. I remember that I kept thinking that somehow the character would come back in a later chapter, but nope.. in one chapter he was a protagonist and in the next, he's dead.  :o  :o  :o
