You really just need to answer a few questions to help you on your search.

How much money are you willing to spend?
New or used?
Would you consider a hybrid?
Do you have favorite brands?
What style would you like?
Would you use the car for commuting or pleasure or both?
Do you want a car for its looks or performance?

Sorry... I've had to deal with this before.  Can ya tell?  LOL

If you get the opportunity, go to a new car show.  We went last fall and I had never been to one before.  All the car dealers had their different models displayed at our convention center.  You could sit in all the cars, talk to knowledgeable experts, compare prices, see all the different features available, etc.  It was very enlightening and the Ford representative even gave us a certificate for $50 if we would go to our local Ford dealer and test drive a Ford, which we did!
