Family History

Have any of you out there done very much family history or genealogy that know where your ancestors come from I've tried before but I can't seem to be getting the word with my we've traced our family name back to 1790 in New York.

i have and found a couple of relatives but not many and they have all passed away

I have gotten clear back to the 1500s but its taken about three years and thats not all the lines just about half
