Laptops are prone to dying pretty easily and they're not upgradeable like Desktops.  I'd recommend buying a Desktop, BUT if you want a laptop I'd recommend avoiding ALL the major brands (HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, IBM).  Ibuypower(dot com) and CyberpowerPC (dot com) build custom gaming Desktops/Laptops and you can find them in stores such as Walmart, Target, and Bestbuy.  Reason I recommend those even if you're not going to game is they last longer than mainstream PC's such as Hewett Packard.  If you can't find one in your price range, then Sony or Toshiba is the next best option.  I'd still recommend buying a desktop though; you'll get better parts that you can upgrade over time from a desktop for less money than a laptop costs.

Tomshardware dot com has reviews on PC parts so you can get a reference for the type of set-up you want.

I just bought a Toshiba laptop from Best buy for 500. It has a 17" screen and a quad core.
I think it is a pretty good deal

I have a Toshiba now that I got for about $400.00 from Walmart 3 years ago.  If I was getting a new one now I think I would go with HP, they have some great one in the 400 to 500 dollar range, that you can skpe on.  They have a newer feature than mine anyway, if the computer thinks it is falling, it will lock up so that  you do not lose any of your data.  It unlocks after 45 to 90  seconds.  Except when I have to use for work, I still prefer my desktop PC.
