I just recently leased a Honda Civic which is supposed to get roughly 29 city miles, but I get more like 23 because I live in Clearwater, FL. But it does get 36mpg highway (cost me only $85 to go from mid Florida to VA beach! Can't beat it.

But I heard the Chevy Volt's are well worth the $$. I've seen quite a few where I live. Try buying one at a dealership (carmax) that will allow you to return it within 5-7days if you don't like it. Or lease one for a year, if you don't like it, no biggie return it at the end of your lease. If you like it, then get a loan to cover the rest.

2007 Chevy Maliu, I LOVE IT! it's roomy enough for 3 people in the back, but not so large to compare to a mini SUV

I drive a 2009 mini cooper. I love it. I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee for many years but it didn't get very good gas mileage and it was a BEAST.

We currently own a 2010 Ford Focus SES.  It averages about 29 mpg.

If you don't need a car immediately, and can wait until the early part of next year, you might want to check out the upcoming 2013 Ford Fusion Energi.  It's also a plug-in hybrid, like the Volt, yet is being reported to be even more efficient than the Volt... insomuch that it may be the most fuel efficient mid-sized sedan in the world.
