Is Halloween evil?
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:15:16 am »
Why are so many of the decorations for Halloween simply frightful and evil-looking? Is Halloween an evil holiday? I believe it has Satanic origins. What do you believe?

For the last 200-300 years Halloween developed a more gothic tone due to the literature of the time and such. Those tones greatly evolved into what we see today. Things like the Jack o' Lantern have a more richer history though, but I don't want to type too much here now.

I believe you have not done enough research. You have to understand that a lot of historical holidays usually have more to do with the weather and changing of seasons than the mythical figures christianity tacked on when the religion copy/pasted them.

According to History.com, Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.

On the night of Oct. 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

For the ancient Celts, Samhain provided mortals an opportunity to celebrate their dead ancestors or, since this is one of two nights during the year the veil between the realm of the dead and the living is “thin,” an opportunity to commune and converse with family members who have “passed on.”

Often, the dead were invited to feast with the living. Following the party, the spirits were escorted out of town by villagers dressed in costumes, including ghosts and goblins - hence the tradition of donning costumes.

Carved pumpkins, or jack-o’-lanterns, are also descendants of Celtic ritual. Lanterns carved out of pumpkins or turnips were used to provide light on a night when huge bonfires were lit, and all the households let their fires go out so they could be rekindled from this new fire. This was believed to be good luck for all families.

I believe that it has been commercialized. It started out as a religious holiday and now it is all about the candy.

Halloween, as superteacher pointed out, is an alteration of a celtic holiday, which means most people would call it Pagan. It's not meant to be satanic, and there are many other things that happen at roughly the same time, such as the Day of the Dead festivals.

Isn't day of the dead the spanish version of the holiday(modern day revelries)? Anyway I watched the real story of halloween on the history channel the name Jack o Lantern comes from a story of an old man getting a coal out of hell from Satan and putting it in his turnip. Of course I think the story is excrement since I believe hell is a common grave of mankind and not the pit of a supernatural volcano...

Not exactly. Unable to eradicate these Dia de los Muertos practices, the Spaniards moved the Day of The Dead ritual to coincide with the Catholic “festival of the dead,” All Hallow’s Eve, (halloween), All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. This provides yet another example of the heiness xtian strategy of 'absorb & nullify' earlier religious practices.

One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

It is what you make it to be. For some it is simply to get out and have a good time. Whether it is trick or treating with friends & family, or attending a costume party. For others, it is day of satanic & evil rituals. As pointed out, there are so many festivals & rituals, this time of year. So pick one and have a good time doing it.
I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"

Halloween is not supposed to be evil. In other countries they celebrate Halloween like we would celebrate Memorial Day, a day to celebrate our dead loved ones.
