"God" is not going to magically transport you out of your situation to some 5 star resort.  If a boat happened to come any time after one did a so called "call for spiritual help", it would merely be the state of life...it isn't unusual for boats to frequent the ocean, now is it?

A mere human can not magically transport themselves out of a desperate situation to some 5-star resort but God can.  I know because it wasn't that long ago that I was in a desperate situation.  I had done everything I could think of to change it.  I was "clinging to a prayer" and God came through.  The 5-star resort He provided has been the "perfect job" in a small shop, close to where I live.  I get to help the people in my neighborhood, plus there's no constant supervison (no nagging boss).   I have a job where I am having so much fun that I can't believe I get paid for this.  (The shop has been in the neighborhood for over 20 years, they've NEVER hired anyone from "off the street" before.) 

"It's not unusual for boats to frequent the ocean" but for the boat to find someone at just the right time and "rescue them" when they NEVER have before...it IS unusual for a boat like that to frequent the ocean.

This is where I get lost in people's beliefs. 

Let me preface this first by saying, I don't know you and I'm sure you are a good person.  I'm just making a generalized statement here. 

What makes someone so much better than another that would entitle them to special treatment from God?   An example of this is why would God give you such an abundance but allow a small child to starve to death?  That makes no sense to me.

I'm not trying to be mean, it's really something that has been in my noggin for a long time.

Hey,I was only using that example 2beat the guy who claimed 2be a diehard atheist.Of course no matter how hard or how many gods you pray2 isn't going 2magically get you out of that mess.Agnostic 2me is more like believing there is something out there greater than us but will not believe until we see actual proof.Your destiny is what you make it,not b/c god did this or that.I started thinking that there's something wrong w/the diehard religious groups.They remind me of sheep blindly walking in2 the slaughter.The time Mom told me "god", helps those who help themselves.My mind felt like it switched on &I replied,if that is so,then why in HELL do I need god for?I couldn't sit 4a couple of wks after that.LoL.
Unlike 2day,it was still legal 2paddle your kid 2death.But for the first time I felt like the invisible shackles & chains binding me had fallen off.This was my first step into thinking for myself. I find Atheists very negative - no positive vibes man!! People that can't believe in something or someone, I believe is a sad Human being!! I also believe they have had a bad childhood that has caused them not to be positve - always negative. They are like the child that continues to rebel against their Parent. Just my opinion !!!

I'm not trying to be mean here to you jwallbank, but that is a very judgmental post.  The above isn't just your opinion, but seems to be a popular opinion among those that aren't atheists and that's the reason for my post here.

I have several atheist friends---they all have very good positive attitudes and outlooks on life.  They aren't "sad" any more often than anyone else.  Except for a couple of them, they had very good childhoods.  They were and still continue to be very good to their parents.

I also have several christian friends---most of the time, their attitudes aren't all that positive.  (They might be positive that everyone else but them is going to hell...that doesn't count.)  They are requesting prayer all the time, they are sad faced most of the time.  Their childhoods were so-so, they either have a living parent stuck in a nursing home (or with other relatives) or they aren't speaking with them.

People are just people and everyone is entitled to believe what they choose.  People that require other people to always agree with them, to follow a particular belief or think exactly like them are the people that are sad human beings.

What do atheists say instead of "Oh my God?"

Oh *bleep*, damn it, aww crap, and pretty much everything else that any adult would say/whisper when something unexpected happens (pardon my language). It's not a big deal or contradictory when an atheist says "Oh my god". It's just a popular phrase that's used a lot. It wasn't always "Oh my god" in the past as there have been many gods in the past that people believed in. For instance when you watch movies like Gladiator, you hear the Romans saying things like "By the gods!" and such which is the same thing. I imagine if you go to India or any polytheistic nation/state, you'll hear the same thing. Heck, even in games like Oblivion the citizens will say "By the Nine Divines!"

I'm a fairly optimistic person who lives life to the fullest.    Don't mistake sarcasm, sass, wit, or a good ol' fashioned "putting ya in yer place" as negativity.

Um, I think you'd be quite hard-pressed to find a person who doesn't believe in "something or someone".  Let's be realistic here.

And where do you get this nutty belief from?  I had an awesome childhood.  I was a very good little girl who got straight A's and was never grounded...sounds like a dream for my single mother.

I'll never understand such unfounded taunts.  Perhaps it is you that had the bad childhood, or at least has a bad life currently?

I don't think that it's a belief in what you are saying it's the saying your self.  I'm Jewish, but find myself saying "Jesus Christ" in certin situations.  These are things that have been learned and in no way do I feel that they are ment in a religous way.
