What should I do i have nothing to do
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:39:26 pm »
I finished school May and am not in school for the summer ( I am a college student) and do not have a job and have been looking everyday!!!! But otherwise have been just sitting around going crazy!!! My mom has been unemployed since November and does not mind sitting around looking online for jobs and hanging out any suggestions to keep myself busy, besides looking for jobs.

You could volunteer and help those less fortunate.  You could intern and gain some valuable knowledge.

I thought of that too but I do not know where that will truly make a difference plus I did not want to get super involved then get a job and have to quit but I will look into it more

What are you studying? People like to hire interns for jobs related to your major. Find something like that~!

What about having a yard sale or selling some items on craigs list or ebay? It would give you someting to do, make a little money and you wouldn't be tied down too much so you can still take a job.

If you go to church, and enjoy helping and teaching kids, ask if they have a Vacation Bible School, it's only like 2 weeks LOTS of fun. You can help them organize crafts or outdoor activities are always fun, even preparing fun snacks. PLUS I AM SURE YOUR MOM WILL BE SO PROUD OF YOU.

You could put an ad in the free classifieds offering some service your good at. Like running errands or babysitting. You could look for free classes and workshops in your area. Keep looking you will find something to do.

[Hi Tashamjoy, have you ever thought of doing volunteer work? That could be a great way of finding something you love to do and meeting new people, making contacts and having a great summer.  :wave:/quote]

apply at temporary agencies. a  few tests are given to measure your skills and interests.
you can make some money while you look for a full time job. Some temp jobs are a few weeks; some longer. you'd know when your current assignment would finish when the right full time job came along and ease into it. Sometimes, a temp job can turn into a full time offer.

another idea: go to the local hospital(s). They may need volunteers to help in the physical therapy department.

I was always able to get part time work at fast food places, cleaning crew for hotel/motel, cleaning crew for restaurants.  If there's a factory near you, see if they are hiring seasonal workers for something - I worked a factory job once stuffing seeds in promotional literature.

For volunteering, if there is an animal shelter nearby (and you are not allergic), they are always looking for people to clean the kennels, take the dogs for walks, etc.  Or go to the library and see if they are looking for volunteers to read to children - or a boys/girls outreach which may be looking for volunteers.

If you still can't find anything, then if there is something you are interested in learning, check out some books, do some research and try to learn it.  Maybe take some time to go hiking or for walks every day you can.  Experiment with cooking/baking new stuff (gather interesting recipes on the internet - or try the daily recipe from the PTC task - as long as it's not too exotic  ;) )

Either that or try to start your own group for some activity you like to do - see if you can get other in the neighborhood/area to join you (maybe organize a block picnic or party to get to know your neighbors better).

Hope you find some of these ideas useful.

I agree with the volunteering. it may help you get a job in the future. Or maybe pick up a hobby possibly something you could sell for extra money until you can get  ajob
