Gaga as Mary Magdalene
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:16:11 pm »
I recently read an article talking about the release of Lady Gaga's music video "Judas". She is supposed to play Mary Magdalene while someone plays Judas. And her publicist says it's going to "shock" the world.

It no doubt will be shocking to some. However, I personally am no longer shocked by anything this woman does. She set a precedent to always be controversial and in so doing, made herself predictable to an extent. What would actually shock me is if she started acting normal. Quite frankly, I find her irrelevant.  :dontknow:

What I do have a problem with though is her need, not just to shock, but to purposely offend people of religious faith. She can have her video, dance around in sleazy crazy clothes and stutter through her lyrics, and portray biblical characters in obscene ways. Go ahead. ::)

But why, pray tell, must she choose a significant day to the religious community to release this video? The video is set to release on April 19th, the day Passover begins. She is really trying to be insulting; and to what end? For headlines? I find that pathetic, but she isn't the first or the last to do such things.  :angry7:

I wish people who find her offensive, or just don't particularly like her music or act would ignore her nonsense. Unfortunately, her video will make headlines and people will probably be outraged and she will get all the attention she is so desperately seeking.   :sad1:

(On a side note, I am dedicating a thread to her nonsense so I suppose I am a hypocrite lol)

Oh well, good luck to you Stephanie, it doesn't last forever.

And your new headline will be "Now What?"

How do you feel about having children dress up with paper feathered head dresses or sports mascots dressed up with totally ridiculous NDN outfits goofing around acting retarded weilding a rubber tomahawk etc?

Just wondering, seems some people(not you) have double standards about a lot of these things.

Get all pissed off if someone mimicks a a figure from their religion but will laugh at someone doing the "woo woo woo" thing, what's up with that?

Personally, I've found Lady Gaga to be disrespectful on all aspects, not just religious.  Her videos bother me quite a bit.  The Telephone video shows a lack of value for human life; the Alejandro video compares the struggle for gay rights to the holocaust (which I am not on board with...anyone who knows gay rights history knows this is not the case...just google "Stonewall"), and the list goes on.  There's been this huge fuss about the song "Born this Way" and how amazing it is with its gay rights message, but quite honestly, if you want an amazing gay rights song, you need to listen to "City Hall" by Vienna Teng (it brought tears to my eyes).  I think Lady Gaga herself is a joke.  I can't stand her.

Walks, I never really considered that.  There is a pic of me as a toddler wearing a colored feathered headdress, and I always thought it was cute, and never gave another thought as to how disrespectful it may seem.  Another symptom of my privilege, I suppose.  Something I do not plan to repeat with my daughter.  Thank you for bringing that up.

I'm not quite as sensitive on those issues as some of the people in my circle and like to think I have a sense of humor. I also feel that we have much more pressing issues that are more deserving of our limmited time and resources, but it is perhaps something to think about.

I do, too, lol.  Among my friends, we used to call late night drives in my vehicle "Jewing it up" and I've often been able to make a joke with my gay boyfriends about breaking out high heels to beat those who oppress us.  Our jokes, though, are made by us without any attempt to bring others down.  Playing "cowboys and Indians", though it may be innocent when children who are unaware of the difference, is not in the same vein, IMO.  I wouldn't burn down a building because of it, but I would surely try to teach my daughter the difference.

I think there is a difference. Only in that most people are ignorant of the Indian culture and history. I have Indian in my family and I'm ignorant about it. I think when children dress up with feathers on their head it's because they think it's cool and they pretend to be a character from a story. I think in those cases it's sort of a tribute (albeit full of ignorance). Indian culture is interesting and people mimic without realizing the significance of what the Indian people have had to endure at the hands of pompous, self important, white people with a superiority complex.

Not all people are ignorant and there is genuine racial hatred out there. Sadly.

In this case though, this woman is not ignorant. Which is why she chose a significant day to the religious community to release her video. Her actions and mimicry are done out of an intent to offend and shock and upset people who hold this time during the year dear. She is metaphorically taking a crap on Holy week and making sure the world sees her do it.

I see a big difference in these actions then unknowingly representing Indians in way that is incorrect, or children playing cowboys and indians because they think it's cool. I think the solution to these issues is making it point of importance to implement more education in school about Indian culture and history. I honestly don't remember learning much about Indians at all in school and I grew up half my life in Oklahoma where every town is named after some tribe or chief, I was born in Ponca City .....it's ridiculous!

Amy, I didn't even get that in that video to be honest. But therein lies the problem with her so called "statements" via videos and outrageous outfits. No one gets it until she explains it, and even then...nobody is talking about what her outfit represents, they are talking about her (good or bad).

When she wore an outfit of dead meat to whatever awards show. I read a bunch of stuff from people talking about her stupidity concerning animal rights. That's not even what her meat dress stood for. Later I read a statement about what her outfit really meant and it had to do with gays in the military. Yet I did not see nary a sparked conversation regarding the issue at hand, only comments about her personally and about her clothes. That's why I say she is irrelevant, nothing she does really makes a difference like she claims to be doing. Her music has a catchy beat and she has a good singing voice, outside of that I don't understand how so many people idolize her.

I'll go with what Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, stated about this and her:
"I find GaGa to be increasingly irrelevant. She thinks she is going to be groundbreaking. She is trying to ripoff Christian idolatry to shore up her talentless, mundane and boring performances."

I guess I am just a little surprised he didn't come out with a more "religious blasphemy!" stance especially coming from the Catholic camp. I wish she would become so irrelevant that she just faded away into nothingness, but it won't happen. I am also surprised there haven't been any lawsuits or injunctions filed to keep this from being released, honestly.
Here is my take on the Gaga. She is a putrid performer, as putrid as the meat dress she wore, and if my grandchildren start idolizing HER (IF she is still around when they are old enough to) I am takin MY bangin body on tour wearing pieces and parts from the hospital morgue! ;D My outfits would be a heck of a lot cheaper than hers....other than the AK-47 she gives birth to in the Born This Way vid. :P

I find it hard to take seriously someone who would assume a name such as "Gaga" to begin with.

I agree with you. but if the world didn't patronize her, she wouldn't do it. as the days of Noah.
Wonder why she doesn't mock the muslims? that would be worth seeing... otherwise, I pay no attention to her.
but it is an interesting topic, I am wondering how many out there agree?

There are a lot of people out there that just think she is a joke. Unfortunately it's not enough people compared to how many ADORE her. So we have to put up with her for awhile.  ::)
