I don't do it, but for why others do, I am not sure. They probably were thought they should do it, and don't question why. It may be similar to people saying; happy birthday, happy holidays, happy father's day, or any of the others.

Smile.....it makes people wonder what you are really thinking. I like to catch people off guard and get pictures. More natural that way!
