With the few people that I know who claim to be bi-polar, they seem to switch from completely normal, to very sarcastic, angry and hurtful to those around,

I knew a lady who was bi-polar most of her life, and only went on medication recently.  She would have normal days, but sometimes get very worked up and make outrageous, rash decisions.  She's very intelligent, but has trouble making "smart" decisions because of her manic phases.
