So Worried about my son
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:24:25 pm »
My son ( 13) has been sick off and on for 6 weeks. The last 2 weeks straight. They have done an ultrasound and blood work and found nothing. He can't eat and when he does he often throws it back up. He's lost 12 pounds, 5 in the last week.
They are thinking gallbladder or acid reflux and he has tests for those next Tuesday. Has anyone had these symptoms happen in their child? Did you get a diagnosis? It's the not knowing that is the worst. :crybaby2:

I don't have any suggestions but I did want to say how sorry I am that he is feeling poorly and they can't figure it out. I hope that they figure out what is going on soon so that he can get on the road to recovery.

Not knowing is definitely the worst part of having to go through something like this especially with a child.

I am so sorry to hear about your son being ill, my prayers are with you, have you thought about getting another opinion from a different doctor? Or considered seeing a specialist? Sometimes when a person is really stressed out over something this can happen (talking from experience) These are just thoughts and I hope that everything turns out well and nothing seriously medically wrong with your son.

gallbladder makes sense
did they do x-ray of the intestine to make sure he is not impacted?

is he keeping fluids in?  watch out for dehydration

After the 2 tests next tuesday, I'll ask for a referral to a gastro specialist, or at least another dr. I don't think its depression or anxiety. His behavior hasn't changed and I spend a lot of time with him. He has been a little better the last day or so. He still feels sick for about 30 minutes after he eats but no vomiting at least. Thanks everyone for your concern .

I hope he continues to improve but a specialist might be in order if he does not get totally well.

I know what you are going through. My youngest son became sick 3 1/2 years ago. He was never sick and full of energy and loved sports. One morning he wake me up with chest pains. I took him to the ER and they sent him to the Children's Hospital. They found white spots on his lungs but no other symptoms and he didn't feel really sick. He was just complaining of bad chest pains and doubling over with them. They let him out of the hospital but he continued to get worse. He went back in with the symptoms worse (a lot), it was almost 2 weeks before they found out what was wrong. He was diagnosed with a rare auto immune disease that is very rare in kids. Not knowing was killing me, but once we found out what the problem was treatment could be started. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Good luck and I agree with you about maybe getting another doctor to check your son out. I had to go that way also.

I am struggling now with my other son (19) who has started having seizures.

I apologize in advance that this is going to sound like HORRBLE advice, especially since your son is so young.  But hear me out. You say he's not eating/ holding his food well? If he's losing too much wieght you may want to consider letting him try marijuana. Cancer patients going through chemotherapy often use it to relieve pain and severe nausea and increase appitite. This at least might be able to ensure proper nutrition untill his illness is diagnosed. There are various recipes you can use it in because, i'm sure you'd agree, a child should not SMOKE anything.

I do not agree at all...unless a dr. is involved, I would not do anything stupid like that.  I don't mean to sound harsh on the poster who posted that idea, but I do not see that as being a good medical reason unless a dr. prescribes it.  If you get caught doing such a thing without a medical backer, you could get into some serious trouble.

I do hope your son gets well soon, please keep us posted.

He's been much better lately. I think I may never know what had him so sick. He's holding food down now, gaining weight back etc. I hope it lasts. All his tests came back normal so I'm not sure what the next step would be if it happens again.
Thanks everyone for your advice though. By the way, the poster who suggested pot, if I knew what he had and that it would help him, I'd allow it. But it's a moot point with him anyway since he started out a little overweight. Losing some didn't hurt him. I've smoked pot when I was younger and it does perform miracles for an upset stomach. He would have to be seriously ill though, I certainly wouldn't want to turn my kid onto it, especially that young.
The pills they gave him for nausea (phenergan) really knocked him out and made him sleepwalk, it wouldn't affect him as bad as that.
I would be scared to though, because its not legal in my state even as medicine. I'd probably have Child Services at my door.
