well most of us are truly not American I suppose as we all came here from somewhere even generations ago.
I was born in the USA so I am a citizen by birth, my husband is Nigerian  and is so "non-american" but he has been in this country for more than 1/2 of his life.

I'm not an American citizen.  I do believe that America can become an ethnicity of culture for a person over time.  Even "Native Americans" (incorrectly referred to as Indians in the USA, historically) originated from Asia thousands of years ago.  And before there were German, Dutch, English people, or Italian, Spanish, French people, there were Germanic peoples, Romans, Gauls, and Celtics, etc., and many of the countries that you think identify with only one, were often intertwined.

That's only if you want to get technical.

I am an American citizen but I was born elsewhere. I came to America when I was three years old.

Wow, I am also Nigerian by birth but I've been in America half my life.

I was born and raised in Ireland so technically I'm not a American even though I became an American citizen 6 years ago. I have lived in this great country 18 years which is almost half my life. You could say I adopted this country and call it my home now. I would consider myself as Irish-American and I am very proud of it. I love living here, but I do miss Ireland a lot. I am not sure where I see myself in my golden years whether I plan to spend them here or in Ireland remain to be seen. All I know is for now I am happy to be living in this great melting pot.
