Alright...let's try this again...
My husband works at a truck stop and has been there since December of 2007. His boss began talking to him about a promotion in January of 2009. The hierarchy at this store is Manager - Assistant Manager - 2nd Assistant and he has been told by his boss many many times that he would be made the 2nd Assistant to have it jerked out from underneath him. Most recently, his boss began training him about 3 months ago for the position, and he has worked countless hours of overtime (without having received a raise for the extra work since they keep telling him he won't get the raise until it is official that he has the position) and the craziest hours imaginable (being switched from 2nd shift to 3rd to 1st from day to day), throwing our entire family off on our sleep schedule (my daughter didn't fall asleep until after 11 tonight and has actually been up until roughly 2am some nights...and she just turned 2 in September!). I've been upset not only about this, but the fact that even though he is working this overtime, he isn't being paid for the overtime. Somehow, even when we add up his hours, the hours that show up on his check are always off between 2-5 hours of overtime. He has been terrified to say anything because (a) he wants this promotion so bad he can taste it and (b) he is afraid he'll get fired, and the money I make as a substitute teacher will not support us without his income (I'm lucky if I get 2 days a week).
Two weeks ago, his boss received a promotion, so the store's assistant manager was made manager and my husband was told that, barring any complications, he would be made the assistant manager. Since this announcement was made, his overtime has increased (last week he worked over 50 hours and the week before around 45). Today was his payday. The first week on his check, he was paid for 39.75 hours and the second week he was paid for 42.36 hours. I was in an uproar when I was told, and I told him that he was to immediately begin applying for other jobs and to start writing down exactly when he clocks in and when he clocks out...to even take pictures of the time clock, because in two weeks if it happened again, the state labor review board was going to be getting a phone call from our attorney.
The issue is, the manager of the store receives a monthly bonus that is a percentage of the store's profits from the previous month. Any inventory shortages, drive-offs, and overtime for the employees, comes out of that bonus. I'm livid. My husband has dealt with crazy truck drivers, cleaned up fuel spills, caught shoplifters, and dealt with people, most recently, coming in on election day and cussing him out because it is illegal to sell alcohol in our state before the polls close...which they know fully well considering
election day happens every friggin year. The craziest of the crazy come out to truck stops for some reason, and they are out all hours of the day there, considering most are open 24/7. My husband has worked every Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years, and every other holiday. We had to fight his manager for him to get his week vacation this year as well, even though we told her three months before our vacation exactly when he was going to take it and we even rescheduled our vacation so it would be more convenient for her!
Like I said...its the management that makes customer service jobs unbearable, cause crazy customers can be dealt with, and are sometimes entertaining.
