Would you call the police if someone was going through your recycling bin?

Not at all lol...I lived in New York for years and that all I saw when I looked out my window...As long as people don't talk or mess up my property they can take the cans lol...They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't really need the money!

I don't think they should be allowed to based on the fact that sometimes people forget to shred documents and these can be used for identity theft.
As well as it doesn't seem like a smart choice for kids to be going through trash. I wonder what they needed?

No I would not, maybe they are trying to make some money so they can eat.

I don't know if I would call the police, but I definitely would find out what is it they are looking for.  For instance its possible they were working for someone else looking for documents with all your personal info on it.  Some people are still stupid and throw out info with their name, address and sometimes even their SS# on it.  So its best to be careful than sorry.

I did call the police, this person was going through my recycling bin and everyone's  in the neighborhood. They came around and stopped him, no arrest, but I saw him in another neighborhood the next trash day doing the same thing.

I wouldn't call unless they were making a mess. I'm not sure if it's legal or not, but as long as they're not hurting anybody, I would leave them alone.

I wouldn't call the police either. It's just trash. Just as a precaution I always shred anything that would have sensitive information on them. Most of the time I've seen people looking for just the aluminum cans, soda cans. They get extra money with it. I think it's harmless. There are actual garbage inspectors who will look through your trash to make sure that you are recycling. If you're not recycling then they will post a fine on your door. For all they know it could be the next door neighbor who just felt like putting their trash bag on your side so that they wouldn't get caught.

there is an old man that goes throught the recycling bins on my street almost every week. i have never called the cops on him because he asked my permission before doing it, he only goes through the blue recycling bins so i don't think he's trying to steal my identity, and because he always cleans up whatever he takes out and does not leave a mess on our street.i figure he just one of the many people that is down on his luck and needs whatever extra cash he can get so one day i started putting the milk jugs and soda bottles (i recycle the cans myself) into a separate box to save him the trouble. i told one of my neighbors and they strated doing the same with their milk jugs and soda cans and now the guy only has to dig through a few cans on our street because a lot of us have been making it easier on him.
