I would do three things.  I would contact the BBB and file a complaint with them.  Second, I would contact the company and stay on the phone however long i had to in order to get to the top of the food chain to file a complaint and try to get it handled (make sure to write down the name and time of everyone you spoke to).  Third, i would contact local tv stations.  Most tv stations have some form of exposing scams like this.  Sorry this happened!!!  Good luck!

the local newspaper here do the same thing   i really think they just want you to take the free paper to boost thier circulation number for advertisers at the end of the free week or whatever just tell them you never wanted it or didnt recieve the paper  i never heard of them going to a collection agency.  and for the magazine subscriptions  what a pain in the *bleep* they are. but if they threaten to go to court for thier money or garnish your wages. just say ok lets go to court   they usually wont show up  but if they do and you dont the court will favor them but if you do show up the court will rule in your favor because they know how these magazine subscriptions operate

Even though the $20 is such a small amount, if they are going to a collection agency, they are going to want this resolved. It can definitely effect your credit rating... Even if they misspelled your name, if the name is close and they have your address, it can still go against your credit score. If you ever get a copy of your credit score, they will break it down by the name they have associated with you along with the payment; I had one entry where they had my middle initial incorrect, but the account was still charged to me.

Whenever you cancel an account, always get it in writing, and retain a copy of it for yourself, noting that you are doing such in the letter, esp. if it is for something you got scammed into beginning in the first place. Otherwise it becomes a game of he said / she said. Definitely go to the BBB and the attorney general to report this scam. This will at least remove any flag that may get placed on your credit score. Going to the news may get the company to cancel your subscription / payment, but if it has been noted on your credit score, it might not go away.

Well, every time I have ever had a real problem with someone like this I threaten them with the BBB. It always seems to work.

@gillendl - I agree..... outside of fusion cash - when I had a makeup trial that I liked they told me I couldn't cancel...I asked why and they said because they will give me a $50 free gift card to the store...I said...I'll report you to BBB and then the lady was like "okay, okay, okay!  ill cancel your acc!" lol
I have ways of making money that you know nothing of.

Just tell them to remove you from their calling list. If they call back after that; it's lawsuit time.
Has never failed.

If they continue to harass you with notices like that, I would notify the FCC and the Attorney Generals office.  I get calls like that and I always tell me no when they say something is free.  A red flag always go up for me because nothing is ever free.  Beware.

I would call the  newspaper one more time and let them know what is going on. Skip the middleman and ask to speak with a supervisor. If they don't fix it, file a complaint. Also, you can write the collection agency and tell them to stop calling and if they don't you can file a complaint against them also. If you didn't give your credit card number or ss#, I would just ignore them. Don't stress it

Just hang up on the next person that calls you offering stuff that you do NOT want.  Keep calling the supervisors of that company and tell them that if they do not quit bothering you then you are going to call the consumer affairs reporter for the local TV station and have them do a story on them.

Here in the Los Angeles area they have reporters that love to get ahold of stories like that.

Or, Next time just hang up on them.

yes i do agree ith you that the only thing you most likly could do

I have no problem hanging up on a telemarketer.  I tell them I'm not interested, that I'm on the Do Not Call List, and to take my number off immediately.  Then I'm like KTHNXBYE, and then hang up.
