Supreme court may decide the future of video games
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:57:43 pm »
Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court may decide whether to hear a case that could have a lasting impact on computer and video games.

The case before the Court involves a law passed by the state of California attempting to criminalize the sale of certain computer and video games. Two previous courts rejected the California law as unconstitutional, but soon the Supreme Court could have the final say.

I'm not a minor, it doesn't matter to me.  :p
I see nothing wrong with prohibiting children from buying violent games.  If they want it so bad, just have their parents buy it for them; if the parents say no, then they don't need it.  Minors can't buy alcohol or cigarettes either, but I don't see anyone jumping up to cry out about that.

The actual law as written makes sense to me:
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/05-06/bill/asm/ab_1151-1200/ab_1179_bill_20051007_chaptered.html

The law, as written, would still allow minors to play those games if the parent bought them.  Parents need to be more involved in their children's hobbies anyways.  The video game/tv/cell phones babysitting kids today just isn't working.

It would be unlikely to affect other media, like movies, simply because scientific studies have shown that it is the INTERACTION with video games that has the greatest affect.  There is a difference in what parts of the brain are triggered with simply watching violence, than the parts triggered by causing violence.

Oh, and I am a dedicated gamer, so I know just what these games are like.

Also, there's a chance this law just may not be struck down.  After all, minors can't watch R rated movies in theatres withough an adult.

IMO it is pretty silly and a waste of time on their part there is more pressing issues then to try to be the parent of everyones child.

I have many graphic games and I let my kids play them most of the time. They have commonsense to know the difference between a video game and real life.
