OK New Question about IP Addys and New IP Service
« on: September 18, 2010, 12:36:01 am »
So i'm still battling another GPT site to get my account back after they banned me. After several emails they now are saying my IP addy comes back to Maryland BUT I live in Va and my address is registered as such on their site. Well that explains why the marked me. NOW, my question is I use a Verizon Air Card for internet access. Not by choice, but because other than dial up and satty this is the only other reasonable option for me until we get DSL in our area, which is very very RURAL btw! So I know very little about this stuff but have been told in the past that IP addys can change and alternate when using an Air Card? Is this true and can that still be the case even though I log in on the same laptop, in the same location (on my couch in my house) every time? Would it not be picking up a signal from somewhere close by in VA? If so I see this as a HUGE problem for all GPT sites, a very very HUGE problem. I'm going to contact Verizon first thing tommorow and try to find out why my IP addy shows i'm in Maryland and either they give me a reasonable explanation or this "other" GPT site is full of it...

My next question is when the time comes that DSL is available in my area and I switch to it, will that not change my IP address? Again I know very little about this stuff but logic would tell me that the IP addy would change especially if it was with a different company? SOOO, when this time comes will I get marked and banned from all GPT sites I am a member of. Will they all say i'm using multiple accounts, or "false information". Would love for Admin or somebody familiar with this type of situation to chime in with any and all info possible on this scenario!

I agree that the whole IP address thing is a big problem for the people who work on GPT sites. I think it is not the GPT sites that make such a big deal about it as the advertisers. They are afraid of scammers who try to get multiple accounts, but meanwhile they are hurting legitimate people who are trying to earn money honestly. I wish they would get rid of the IP address rule and stick with name and address verification to ensure each person only has one account.

Can not really do that as there are people who would use different names or addys to hav multiple accounts

ieatfelt-- would you share what FC told you?

While I don't have your exact problem, I don't understand all the issues about ISP addresses.

I do know that I want to avoid community ISPs and there is something about "proxies" that involve ISPs that move around -- or something like that -- that can cause problems.

I have a single dial-up ISP that I use in 2 locations (NJ and PA) and that has not caused any problems with any of the PTC or GPT sites that I'm with, even tho my computers in each location "know" where they are (ie NJ and PA respectively).

Most importantly, however, is that no one else using my computers belongs to any of the sites that I belong to -- which is what the sites/advertisers are most concerned with.
