If you're familiar with Jewish or Christian understandings of God, you may find that Islamic views about God are pretty similar. Most of what Muslims say about God would be readily affirmed by traditional Christians and Jews.

For Muslims, like members of Judaism and Christianity, God is the only ultimate reality. God depends on nothing else, but everything else depends on God.

Everything will perish except his [God's] face. Because God is the only necessary (rather than contingent) reality, only God is eternal. Everything else exists only to the extent and for as long as God wills its existence. Thus everything else depends on God for its existence.

In recognition and acceptance of this dependence upon God, each person should submit to God. According to Muslim tradition, all humanity originally submitted to God. Humans, however, are forgetful. As a result God sends prophets to remind people to return to and submit to God.
