Hence, the legend goes, that couples that were having children were required to first obtain royal permission (usually from a local magistrate or lord) and then place a sign somewhere visible from the road in their home that said "Fornicating Under Consent of King", which was later shortened to "*bleep*". This story is hard to document but has persisted in oral and literary traditions for many years; however, it has been demonstrated to be an urban legend.

There is an entire list of other 'meanings' given to the word, which are false. This is just one of them. There are quite a few sites out there where you can find this if you do a search for it, but I went to wikipedia first, only because I knew it was handy and right there. I have stated wiki is NOT always the most reliable, but since this particular wiki article backs up the rest, I used it here.
