I'd take a cat over a dog anytime.... if it wasn't that my Hubby is allergic to cats I'd at least have two instead of two dogs. I love my Boxer but he is just not as cudlely as a cat would be. And my chihuahua is not as soft. I hate the smell of wet dogs and it takes alot to keep them clean. The ears, mouth ahh just everything. My Boxer comes in and leaves a big dust print where ever he lays everytime he comes in from outside. I guess I believe the stereotype is right since cats are easier to take care of, more cudlely, and is always ready to just lay around with you when you want it too...... just what women tend to like on a pet!

my kids were playing with a tiny dog at a friends house the other day and they loved it. i guess i wouldn't mind a dog if my husband was willing to bathe him and brush him and walk him...that's just too much maintenance for me lol that's why i prefer cats. they clean themselves and exercise themselves and when they feel like showin you some love they will and it makes you feel special. but the kids could probably benefit from a playful little puppy who will chase them and get dirty with them lol

I thought I had replied to this topic already, but it appears that I haven't.

I've always displayed a preference for dogs, but in all actuality I could be deemed more a cat personality.  I love dogs; my husband and I are discussing getting our daughter a dog for her third birthday next year, but I don't particularly enjoy how needy and affectionate dogs can get.  I definitely tend toward needing the alone time to myself.  However...not a big fan of sweeping up fur and vacuuming it off my couches constantly, either.

And cats can be so insubordinate.  You can say, "no, no don't sit on that plant that came to the new world with the pilgrims over four centuries ago, you'll kill it!" yet...the cat could care less.  Disappointed that the cat is devouring that mouse it expertly caught right in front of you?  Meh, whatever.  A dog, however...they aim to please.

I guess I didn't answer the question.  I'm not entirely sure.  They both have their positives and negatives.   :-

No, i don't think that men prefer dogs to cats. I have 2 cats but I prefer dogs. The cats walked into my front door & the only thing that I agree with my mother is.... when life walks through your door, you never turn it away.
As for giving your 3 year old a puppy.... don't do it; that is how pets end up being dumped in shelters & some of them are kill shelters. Ya, they're cute for a short time but after a while, the extra work b/c a chore. Children shouldn't be given a pet until they are old enough to take responsibility for it. Save your money & time & don't get a dog or cat, take your child to the zoo.

well my 3 year old wouldn't be taking care of the dog, he would get all the benefits of having a pet without the responsibility. but i do not believe that you get an animal and discard it when you don't want it anymore. my pets are like my children and i would never give them away just cuz they make messes and make my life difficult at times.

and to make it even better, i would get a puppy or dog from a shelter, not a pet store. but i am still undecided because i'm not sure we have the finances to get another animal right now  :sad1:
our cat has cost us almost $5,000 in vet bills in the past couple of years and we just can't afford even that! so my 3 year old is probably just gonna have to wait awhile.

I would never want to own a cat, but I don't dislike them. Hubby and I both are big dog fans. Little ankle biters, naw. We own 2 rescues a lab/bully mix and a German Shepherd/Sharpei.

I'm glad your thinking things through. Your cat alone is like taking care of another human child. I agree that you should probably wait on the puppy until you're sure about your Income. It's so dangerous now a days to get into debt or lose a job. I to was tempted in getting a dog due to a recent home robbery. They stole my first & only flat tv! I wanted to get a huge mean looking dog but I own 2 cat's one who's sick. They cost me about 3 grand each just in vet visits  alone not for emergency or surgery. I would like to try pet insurance but right I've heard that they're still not regulated or legit.  Instead of buying puppy right now, try going to the shelters for a visit with you child. A lot of  poor family dogs & cats have been dumped into shelters because the family have lost their jobs, homes, income due to the recession. Good Luck & keep an eye on your fiances.  : )

I love my dog...and cats are ok but there is nothing like a dog to make your day.  Dogs are always great companions...they are always in tune to your moods and try to help you be happy.  I prefer dogs then cats because cats don't really have personalities...if you want some thing to ignore you, you might as well get a cat!!!
