Should a misdemeanor be the only reason not to get a job?
« on: June 30, 2010, 01:11:00 pm »
So here is my current problem. I am 24 with 3 small children. I have only been to jail one time in 2004 for theft. It was a misdemeanor. I was 18 and stupid and I wasn't even pregnant with my first child yet. I have since learned my lesson and I know it was a stupid childish act. But it has still prevented me from getting EVERY job have applied for. I have been out of work for 2 years straight. I can get it expunged but it will be $100. And that's not even a guarantee. That''s just to go in front  of the judge. I don't have that kind of money just laying around. I have been forced to get state assistance and the father doesn't pay child support at all.

I just want feedback from everyone. I have had interviews where I explained the theft and others that I just didn't mention at all even when asked. I have a stack of rejection letters due to the misdemeanor.

Do they ask if you been convicted of a misdemeanors? ive only seen have you ever been convicted of a felony

I would try a couple of applications and not putting anything down for convictions use your head which ones will check.

ive worked with people who been in prison for alot more than theft.  I dont  think a misdemeanor at 18 years of age should count against you  if its only one time.

Just my opinion from personal experience, but get the $100 and get it expunged as soon as possible. You do NOT want that hanging around your neck the rest of your life. Our son couldn't get a job and he had a Masters degree, until his record was clean. It's crazy out there, so play the game no matter what it takes.

A teenage mistake shouldn't haunt somebody for the rest of their life.   >:(  But the economy is so bad, businesses can afford to be extra picky.

Maybe the local public defenders office could recommend a more affordable attorney, or some other service to help you out.

It's not the attorney that costs $100, it's the court fees. It can be done without an attorney at all, but it's harder.

You know, honestly, where I work it says that it isn't the only reason you shouldn't get a job, and that if you explain what happened that it depends on the situation.

You think someone would give you a chance, especially after the time elapse. What kind of jobs are you applying for? Are they all retail?
