For a long time I wanted to be a flight attendant. After college I went on all these interviews and never got it. I went on to do other jobs over the years but a few years ago I decided to try it again and see what happens and here I am with the job I've always wanted. I'm just thankful to have a job and will stick with it for as long as I can but the reality is that it's not all fun and games.
is it not all fun and games cause you are on a plane and the way terrorism is nowadays
what makes it not all fun and games ?
It has nothing to do with the potential for terrorism it's just the entire lifestyle involved. People have this notion that pilots and flight attendants have this glamorous life traveling to all these different places. The reality is yes we might travel to different places but it's work and we hardly have time to do or see anything but go to the hotel go to bed and go right back out the next day. You're always working so you don't have time to go anywhere even on your days off.
The airline industry has never been a stable one especially in recent years. It's highly unusual to retire from an airline because there are always layoffs, bankruptcies, mergers etc. Oftentimes you bounce from airline to airline trying to stay ahead of going down with the ship. This is my second airline (not as a flight attendant) I was laid off of my first airline (ticket agent) a month after starting the job. Especially when the economy is not doing good people travel a lot less or find other ways of transportation besides flying.
I work 12-14 hour days almost every day for 3-6 days (how long a typical trip lasts) and only get paid for less than half that time. I only get paid from the time the wheels go up until they come down. I don't get paid for time spent getting the plane ready, loading and unloading passengers. I don't get paid for 2 hour delays, canceled flights (sometimes for a cancellation depending on the reason). Speaking of pay, it's low, so low in fact many pilots and flight attendants qualify for food stamps! Yes the majority of pilots are not rich like some people think. Yes there are some making BIG bucks but the majority don't at all so flight attendants of course make way less than pilots.
You don't go home every night when you finish work you go back to a hotel room. The schedule is up and down. Sometimes you have to get up at 4am, the next day maybe you can sleep in until 11am. Some days you don't get a lot of sleep. You can't eat a decent meal for days because you are stuck in airports and the only choices are crappy, unhealthy, not to mention expensive fast food place which you eat everyday because you really have no choice.
A lot of us live in other cities not where our base is so you spend time trying to commute say from your home in LA to your base in New York. With flights being cut left and right you have to use a day off just to fly to work because you fly standby and you might not get a seat because of course they need to get paying customers on first. I could go on and on.
I'm not complaining. Just telling the truth. For the most part I enjoy my job.
