Why do we even need these sayings? Not just Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, but all of them.

When someone tells me "Merry Christmas" I always say back "Happy Hanukkah!"  If they say "I'm not Jewish!" then I respond "I'm not Christian."  It puts them in a really odd spot.

...and I'm not Jewish either.

I like that! Most of the time I hear Merry Christmas from someone it's at a cash register. I just ignore it. I figure it's the same as them saying "have a nice day", they don't really mean any of it. It's just something to say.

Since we aren't religious I don't really say anything to people one way or the other. I celebrate the winter solstice , but I wouldn't tell people Happy Solstice .

I think it's ridiculous on a verbal level. I can understand businesses doing the Happy Holidays thing to keep all their customers happy. But in a plain sense the individual saying it is just wishing you a good day. Nobody cares except the extremists.

Happy Festivus for the rest of us.

We're a social species that enjoys interacting with each other through spoken forms of communication?
