My son got a permanent job as a janitor for a school district in Ca. He had been working for months full time as a substitute .A part time job came up as permanent which could lead to full time soon hopefully. He was shown his medical benefits and dental if he wants them. They are a jock for part time he'd have to pay 408.00 a month .Full time employees pay 75.00 a month.Dental is 47.00 for part and free for full time. He's going to look into Covered California and he has already. This is a crazy they are penalizing part time workers. I feel like I need to contact the Government of Ca about this or call a local news station and get a reporter on this. You'd think a school district would offer better than this.

A lot of companies these days aren't offering great benefits. They're offering the bare minimum and passing the costs to their employees so health care benefits aren't great. Over the years my health insurance has gone up. I pick the cheapest plan available and try to be as healthy as I can so I can avoid using it.

At least he has something. I don't have any benefits.... but I do have a job!

I second that!

Yes that is bad but to be honest with you the retirement benefits for the school district in our area are even worse. As a retiree if I took the insurance it would cost me around $700 now I get a benefit toward insurance so I just get my own but it is definitely not right. I hope something good happens for your son to help him out.

That's the problem making healthcare mandatory... Fcks up the pricing of insurance and limits employers to options.
-
ewww....that is terrible! Obama care would probably be more beneficial to him. Tell him to look into that.

lol. That is the way it is. Tons of people don't have insurance at all. No, I wouldn't think a school district would be better. Don't know why you do. The ins where I work it a total joke. Premiums are $960 a year and the total pay out is $1000 a year. So why would anybody take it. But they can say they offer insurance. SO they are inside the law.

benefitss should be better than what they are, just how hard do we have to work to deserve them. we work to hard and to much now
-
They need to just make it so you can afford to go to the doctor. I read where insurance premiums in my state were going to go up by at least 30% or more. That is insane. Nobody can afford that. You need one person working just to have insurance. I don't have it so it doesn't matter. This country is so far in the crapper it ain't ever coming out of it.
-
Benefits should definitely be better than this... there is soo much that could be improved in this country! And then, as someone else said... there's people who have a job and don't have any benefits at all! And that is definitely unacceptable.

That's how it goes sometimes take what you can get and be thankful hes working and pulling in a little bit of money compared to nothing

I worked in the same job for about 35 years. I started off under a grant and finally became a full time employee. I stayed with this job because of the benefits. They paid for the employees insurance, the only cost involved was for family coverage. I'm now retired but not old enough for medicare and they have to pay my insurance until I go under medicare.

The good news is working for the school district is a great paying job with wonderful benefits. He is extremely fortunate to get this permanent position that will lead to full-time. So, aside from the temporary increase in his insurance, he has his foot in the door to a union job that many others would love to have.
School District employees get all kinds of benefits outside of wages & benefits. They get cheap interest loans for housing, ton of perks.
If he can get back into teaching, well the teachers here in CA make $90,000 a year for about 8 months of work. They get a pension after 20 years of working that equals 90% of their pay, so around $80,000 a year for being retired isn't bad, with full benefits.
I know this for a fact as many of my relatives are teachers. My neighbor who lives across the street, was a janitor for the school district & is now retired, he lives in a beautiful home. Tell your son to hang in there, it gets better.

In some cases part time workers don't get any benefits.

I think I'll shut up right now before I even think to open my mouth bout' benefits in Illinois. My ex not paying child support has been a blessing in disguise as far as medical insurance goes. I'm luck as far as my future goes as well. Employed with Kroger - we've got great insurance. Even for part timers.

It is really hard these days to find any job with great benefits!

I think that everyone who works is subject to the same insurance mess since everyone was required to get it. It appears that we now shoulder the burden for those who can not afford coverage and are forced to take inadequate benefits for ourselves.I had fantastic insurance through my wife's company up until seven years ago. Reasonable premiums, minimal co-pays, and never a question as to whether my insurance would be accepted at any facility. I was prescribed a drug two months ago that would have helped with a serious ailment. The pharmacist checked and said that it wasn't covered and would cost four hundred and eighty dollars. They double checked, fiddled with the paper work, called me back and said that it would only be eighty dollars. I told the pharmacy that I would rather die than pay more than ten dollars for a prescription and passed. I am not blaming the current administration because the same plan, under a different name, was going to be put into play if the other president had been elected. Just not really fair to those who work.
