It use to be tradition for the bride's family to pay for the wedding..I think all that went out the window when women started putting their careers before marriage. Which is not a bad ideal...I paid for mine..

I got married in march and the total cost for us including rings was $1000.
Got married at the courthouse for free and had a reception with friends and family. Cooked the food ourselves. Had friends serve at the bar. It can be done nicely yet cheaply if you are willing to put in the effort.

well we living in a new century traditions are a rare breed my friend

i always thought the grooms family paid for the reception???

well many traditions have stopped. men don't dress up to go to work lol, more women work now(well now these days most people need to live a life). so yea most parents of the bride probably dont have much extra cash laying around from paying all the bills since they are most likely retired.

My partner and I will be paying for our wedding out of our own pockets... wouldn't it be nice to have families helping out, haha

No, traditionally, the groom and his family are supposed to handle the rehearsal dinner, the bride's bouquet and the honeymoon. The bride and her family are responsible for pretty much everything else. But nowadays, the families get together and decide who can pay for what. I know my parents aren't expecting Justin's parents to pay as much because they are having far fewer guests than my family is.

I got married last year and the majority of the cost fell on my husband and me (the wedding ceremony, reception, DJ, Cake, half of the honeymoon, wedding party gifts, flowers, half of the tuxs and half a dozen other things). His family did not even chip in a dime (his parents lent us money which we had to pay back with some of the money we received as gifts). My parents covered half of our honeymoon, hosted the rehearsal dinner, paid for my wedding dress, covered gratuity for the reception and DJ, watched our dog while we were on our honeymoon and my mom made all of the flowers, which were silk.
