Title: Grocery prices
Post by: koolcraftlady on July 20, 2012, 06:36:31 am
Well it sounds like meat prices are going up again.  :( The reason if due to the drough the United States is suffering from.  I am sure that everyone will see that not only meat will go up, but almost sure everything will.  If meat goes up very much, quess I won't be buying much.  It is almost out of reach for me now, not sure how I will purchase meat if it goes much higher.

you can go to the store when the prices are lowest; one day a week flyers are in your local newspaper.
unfortunatetly, Nestle, Pepsi and one other big company are selling bottled water in the stores. where does  the water come from? our reservoirs. what can be done?  people can stop buying bottled water and filter the water instead. watch the documentary  "tapped" to verifyu what I am saying. :)

I have recently discovered the "Sunflower" store whose motto is: "serious food...silly prices". Their meat and veggies are really very cheap and good quality!

I wish there was a store like that where I live. We might be vegetarians someday and walking to work if gas prices don't go down.

I have found buying in bulk helps, as well as finding places like Grocery Outlet, which is a place here in San Jose, Ca I'm not sure if you can find a place like that where you live, but its worth a good healthy try. If not I've found avoiding Safeway helps, if that doesn't then get a hold of all the grocery flyers you can and buy your meats from the stores that advertise the lowest prices for there meats. This will be a weekly thing but it can work, if nothing else I've found shopping at a Mexican store works. They have good prices on meat most of the time.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

Call all the grocery stores within a radius of you and do a price comparison, where I live they have what we call a pick 5 where you can get 5 packs of meat for 19.99.  Also, check the sale circulars as soon as you get to the store for sales.

There is no doubt that some grocery prices are rediculous but I can tell a huge difference in my grocery bill since I gave of red meat and pork four months ago.  I can really say that I'm healthier and a little more wealthier!

Sunflower is great.  Are you from Colorado by chance?  there is a store called sprouts that is pretty much the same--an awesome year round farmers market.  in fact, sprouts will be merging with sunflower and all sunflowers will turn into sprouts.  I shop there mainly for veggies and fruits.  i can get a ton of stuff for the week(for a family of 3 going on 4) for $15-$20 and then get a few other items (bread, pasta, meat, etc) from stores like safeway (they have a great coupon policy).

Meat prices are ridiculous but I do shop around for the best prices on it before I buy and If its on sale I will buy it in bulk and split it up and freeze in smaller packages. It is not only meat prices that are soaring everything else seems to be skyrocketing as well. Things don't look so good for our economy. You cant always believe everything you read because if we did we would be horrified at the things that we are actually eating in our food and to me that is more horrific than the cost.

The prices of food stuff are outrageously high because they are affected by the high price of transportation, also known as "fuel".

Hi "acraw558", I am from Sacramento. I heard yesterday that Sprouts and Sunflower are amalgamating....they now promise more stores, more variety and more jobs. I'm so glad that I "found" this store....bought meat and veggies for about 2 weeks for under $25! It made my day!!

I live alone and buy from a store called Grocery Outlet. It might be regional. They sell at cost plus 10% and you don't have to buy in bulk or bag the groceries yourself. The stock varies and I have found things there I'd never seen before. Great deals! Another thing I watch for is the buy one-get one free or clearance items at larger supermarkets. Winn-Dixie recently had much of their meat and poultry at buy one-get one free and I stocked up and started cooking again. I also buy a lot of things at the dollar store. Dollar General's bread is only $1.00.

Thanks for all the good information.  I live in Ohio so I don't have a Sunflower store near me.  I usually only buy meat if on sale and good price.  Don't have room to buy in bulk so very limited on what I can purchase.  Trying to save a little money and purchase a small chest type freezer.  If all else fails I quess I will be eating more vege's and fruits to avoid having to pay high prices for meat.

Unfortunately, I think there is a good chance that a lot of groceries are going to be going up as the price of corn goes up.  It has been a rough season for a whole lot of farmers with the drought in the Midwest.

Indeed grocery prices are insane.  I find myself going to 3-4 different stores per week to stretch our dollars.  This last spring we began eating healthier and the old adage eating healthier costs more isn't so true.  I rely on Aldi to do probably 70% of my shopping.  Clip coupons and utilize sites like saving star.

Every time I go to the store for food the prices keep going up and up and I don't get any assistance at all.  So I am about to just start eating one meal a day because when I am busy doing something else my mind is not on food anyway.  The weather being as hot that it has been some things are going to keep going up and up.  How are we suppose to feed ourselves and our families.

It seems every time I go to the grocery store something has gone up.  This summer I had several friends give me items from their gardens, so I canned for the 1st time.  I have green beans, spaghetti sauce, and salsa put up for this winter.  Every little bit helps out!!!

Grocery prices are high because gas prices are high and as long as the gas prices keep rising so will price of meat.  Just eat lots of chicken and they are high too, so you do what you have to do.

watch for sales. Sometimes if you go into the grocery store just before closing you can buy some good deals. Buy in bulk when a large cut is on sale and the split it up. That way you can get several meal off one cut. It does save money.

Grocery prices have been going up.  At least stores are always offering some type of sells to combat the high cost of food.  The prices haven't been bothering much since I always find a way around it.  I just usually just look at the ads to see what's on sale and clip coupons.  Then shop at the discount and mass merchandising stores first before the major chains.  It would be easier if natural/organic companies would offer coupons more often.  But I see they need the money since they're products are not modifed (organic).

yes, the stores give you coupons and advertised prices are on sale, but if you look, they have raised the price before they put it on sale so you haven't saved anything.

As long as the Fed keeps printing money and weakening our dollar costs will continue to rise. It's called inflation.

I can't believe the prices in the grocery store these days.  I cut meat purchases drastically and will try to get more than one meal out of the purchase.  I purchase a chicken for a dinner roast and then make my chicken soup from the remaining chicken.  This way I get a lot of meals out of one chicken and I love home made soup.

We have adults in my house now, no more children, so we were able to cut out all the snack food, like corn chips, snack crackers, candy, ice cream, etc. This food is not great for us at this age anyway.  I only purchase ice cream on sale, once in a while, or nuts. We try to buy healthy food on sale or I really like the Farmers Market these days.

I usually have a large crowd on Thanksgiving and am not looking forward to the large food bill  Oh I have cut down on the amount of parties we host also.

I probably will decrease my meat and go to frozen veggies and fruit. I have a big family, so I am going to have to be creative if it goes up too much. I do have food in storage because I believe it's an insurance policy against hard times

Everybody is talking about prices going up, in some cases they are, but the fundamental idea of prices going up is incorrect.  What's really happening is that your dollar is worth less year after year, that's the real problem.  Prices for certain products can go up and down, like for a barrel of crude oil, coffee is another example.  If the price of everything is increasing, it means that your currency is worth less and less every year, and that's what you should really be worrying about.

I watch for sales and mark downs. We have a store here where you get 4 or 5 (can't recall which right now ) packs of various meats for less than $20. it'll have say a pack of hamburger about 2 1/2 -3 pounds, maybe some chicken leg quarters about 4-6 pieces, or maybe some chicken breast strips, some kind of pork and maybe a couple of round steaks or stew meat.

Groceries have become ridiculously expensive over the last few years to the point where gas & groceries are as much as our house payment. In the meatime our income has actually gone down.  I do utilize stores like Grocery Outlet and Aldi's.  View internet ads to get the weekly specials and utilize coupons for further savings.  Doing much more research and following blogs dedicated to frugal shopping and lower cost but healthy recipes.  Careful planning is essential.  A lot of people I know are growing their own vegetables and canning/freezing.  Sales tend to go in cycles.  Keeping a price book for comparison also helps.  Fortunately we have two major stores within a  mile of one another which means I can get the specials at each without wasting gas to save a few cents.
