Would you start a garden to save money on your monthly household food bill? If so, what would you grow?
-
I grew up on a farm so of course I would! They are wanting to pass a law to keep people from growing their own food...
-
I definitely would. I love to save money! Right now my
garden grows tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, corn, squash,
egg plant, beans, cauliflower, strawberry, watermelon, cantaloupe,
and lettuce. I have peach, cherry, apple, apricot, and pear trees. I
love it when the weather starts to get nice.

I would love to grow a garden. My grandpa had a farm and I enjoyed going to it and eating the fresh food of the farm. Now my backyard is only 4 feet by 10 feet. It does not make for a great garden.

would love to pretty hard to do in an apartment complex.

If I had the time and opportunity, yes. My list would include... potatoes, tomatoes, and carrots to name a few. ;D

I just moved from an apartment. I grew tomatoes, strawberries and bell peppers on the small front area. I just moved to a house and am really going to enjoy expanding my gardening. I will probably plant lemon cucumbers, herbs, lettuce and many more.

I grow a garden every year. We live in a condominium complex. So we only have the area on our decks to use. I make use of all the space that I do have with plants in pots. It takes some trial and error to figure out which worked best for us but we are now growing tomatos, beans, peas, green beans, lettace, potatos, and beets. This year we are going to add a couple more plants. As far as having time to do this I find that it is something the whole family can do and it only takes a couple minutes a day when you are growing it right out your front door. I know that I only take about 5 min a day to do my gardening. Some extra time is needed in the spring but I find it makes a good family project where we all get to spend sometime working together. Also my son and his friends are eatting more veg because they are on the deck and they will just walk out there and pick something to eat in the summer it is great to see a teenager and friends eatting veg not chips and junk.

I live on a farm and I still grow things in pots on the front porch. I have basil for pesto, the mixed lettuce, and spinch.

I want to try to get an herb garden to grow on the kitchen windowsill. I love to use fresh herbs when I cook, so it'd be nice to have them growing right where you need them. I may also try a veggie garden if I get the time this spring to plant one. When I was growing up, my parents had a huge garden; we'd have tomatoes (both beefsteak and cherry), bell peppers (red and green), peas, beans, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, and the one side was edged with raspberry bushes. My mom would can the tomatoes when they were ripe so we could have them year-round. She'd also pickle the cukes, and make raspberry jam.

It can be done just about anywhere. Look up ECHO on the net. They specialize in teaching around the world how to grow in any small area. :)

Im in the process of starting one ...can't wait to have home grown tomatoes..YUM YUM!!

:sad1: I used to have a garden and I really enjoyed the benefits of the process; not only watching the fruits of my labor spring forth but also just knowing where my fruits, vegetables and herbs were coming from. That I do believe the the one thing that I really do miss the most! I had to relocate to a city and now I am unable to have a garden because I now live in an apartment complex. Maybe one day, I will be able to have a garden once again. :peace:

If I had the time and the skill required, as well as the right soil to do it (the backyard is clay and flooded most of the time) I would definitely do it.

I so hope that doesnt pass. I love growing my own food not just because of saving money. but gardening is good for the soul. getting your hands dirty and getting out in the fresh air.
I have 100 x 80 foot garden and i grow a variety of fruits and veggies. We are even growing fruit plants and trees.

Nope, I live in arizona...nothing lives in the sun.
If we were meant to grow things here, it wouldn't be a desert.

I would plan mint and lettuce because it's one of the food we want to eat daily.
