Title: There were like no kids trick or treating
Post by: prillycake on October 31, 2010, 07:43:15 pm
I took a look out my front door around 7pm expecting craziness, and NONE of my neighbors or people down the street had their lights on lmao. I'm like wow I feel bad for the kids who live on my block. My mom used to drive us around the neighborhood anyways, we would go to the most scary houses or where we saw a lot of porch lights. But this year was terrible!

My town has set times :notworthy: and during like the first 20 minutes I swear I thought they were going to invade the house, then all of a sudden NOTHING, I'm not joking after 15 minutes I went and took a shower, my dogs didnt bark at all. It was so weird, maybe it was a little to cold and people went home, whatever I've got plenty of leftover sweets.

I live on a huge hill, so I don't get a lot of trick-or-treaters anyways... but this year the neighborhood was practically deserted :(

I wish I could say that myself.  I'm extremely exhausted from all the Halloween events in my neighborhood.   From Wednesday through Saturday, I attended three Halloween parties for children: one at Gilda's Club,  another at my son's Greek School, as well as another at his school.  We missed the Ragamuffin Parade in Ridgefield because I totally forgot about it.  My sister-in-laws kids, our friend and my son ended up trick-or-treating in three different places.  The boys went with me and our friend trick-or-treating in Jersey City.  One of my sister-in-law's daughter went trick-or-treating with her school friends in Ridgefield.  The other daughter went with our friends kids that lived in Secaucus, NJ.  Halloween for us was like never-ending.

wow, i've been hearing that from everyone,
from different states even!

...i was working (http://www.partycity.com)
so halloween has been crazy for the past three
weeks. one day, we made close to $35,000 just
in costumes/halloween merchandise! i'm exhausted.

with as many costumes that were sold, its hard to
believe that not many people participated this year!

plenty of people trick or treat around here, I just live on a dead end street with dark woods at the end... Its pretty fun to go back there at night, but in the high effenciency sense for candy, dead ends are a waste of time, and the RICH nieghborhood is right behind mine.

Thats alott! When I worked at Little Caesars Halloweens were crazy busy like that too. Our lines would go all the way out the door and wrap around the builiding in the parking lot and continue down to the side street! I'm in Motorcity too so many people! And I was always on register! I deff. don't miss working that day but heyy I got good tips!

I'm in a semi-gated community so there are no children going from door to door.  There was the annual "Harvest Festival" at church.  That's about it.

@ prillycake, Yep, so you don't have to imagine how it was for me driving to sugar-crazed boys home from trick-or-treating.  But they were much calmer once they ate Chinese food and watched funny videos.

This year was probably the slowest it has been since we've lived here, which is now seven Halloweens.  We used very little of the candy we bought, which meant towards the end the kids were getting nice chunks.  I guess this was one instance where it paid to be a straggler. lol

The weather can't be to blame, as it was quite gorgeous for this time of year.  I'm not exactly sure why.  Coming into today, being a Sunday with no school, I thought it was going to be quite crazy.

Maybe it's just because people don't have the money to buy their kids costumes?  Or, parents are getting lazier and lazier and can't be bothered walking around with their kid?

I noticed a LOT less people on our street giving out candy this year, too.  My wife and I pondered whether it was because a lot of them are getting older, or if it's just they really have no money to even buy some candy to pass out.  Whatever it may be, it was one of the less eventful, slower Halloweens I can remember.

I lol'ed when u said maybe the parents didn't have enough money for costumes. Reminded me of when I was a kid. Money was tight every year I was either a mime, angel, or farmer (easy home-made costumes haha). When i was a mime i would make a box shape around my head with my hands and wouldn't talk. But yea, it was probably a combination of the reasons u listed. I bet the end of the night kids were thrilled when they got to your house lol jackpot!

I noticed that many people also didn't have any decorations. Which is strange, because usually this place is CRAZYYYY decorated!

I think a lot is the economy for sure.  Also, some parents don't feel good about letting their kids go door to door anymore.  I know that some parents thourouly inspect the contents at home before any gets eaten.  I usually give out money.  A roll of nickels or dimes streches well.  I moved over a year ago, and don't get any children in my gated community as I stated before.  I only got about 30 in my last residence last year.

Unfortunately many neighborhoods are experiencing the same thing including mine.  I think it's because nowadays you never know who or what's going to be behind that door. Many parents also fear that the candy has been tampered with. To make up for it many towns hold Halloween parties for the kids.

This was my first Halloween up here in OH, all the rest have been in TN.  Is there a difference in the number of kids that go trick or treating in the north compared to the south?  I live in a nice apartment complex, with a good number of children.  I was expecting trick or treaters, so my fiance bought candy, but not a single child was seen walking around yesterday.  :o  I lived near apartment complexes down in TN, and everyone always took there kids to the nearby apartments for candy too.  (Good amount of candy/amount of walking ^_~)  I don't see the point of driving children around, unless there's weather issues.  I had always chalked it up to parent laziness whenever I see cars parked alongside a house, with kids perfectly able to walk (and old enough to have the stamina) seated inside.  Why take the kids at all, if you can't bother getting the full experience by walking with them.

I will admit though, that there was always at least 2 adults with our family children at all times.

I think more people do parties, and events or trick or treat in malls and such. I live in Atlanta and we took my niece to the Georgia Aquarium treat or treat event. I bought candy the first 2 years I lived here but I only had 1 group of kids come to our door. I still buy candy (for us really lol) in case someone should happen to come by.

Hey, the reason why my mom drove us is to go pick up more friends and go to different neighborhoods. We would get out and walk down a busy block then get in the car to go to another busy area (some streets were dead). I've actually never went to apartments for trick or treating i just figured they didn't give any out lol! One thing i missed out on this year was at sorrentos pizza they give free jumbo slices away, of course theres a huge line but it was kind of tradition. Some people would go home change into different costumes and go back for more lol. I never did that of course  :D

That type of driving isn't what I'm talking about.  The parents I'm talking about would stop next to a house, the kids would pile out and get candy, get back into the car, and then the parents would drive down to the house next door, etc.  That's the laziness I'm referring to.

Lol i see. They were definetely being lazy, unless they had some type of disability, why not just walk?

We actually had a lot more kids come to our house this year than previous years. My husband hands out the candy and I take our kids out trick-or-treating. What I find funny is that just in our neighborhood a lot of people don't even hand out candy any more. Most of the houses are dark. I mean that is completely fine if you don't have kids, but if you have kids and they are out trick-or-treating I really think you should be giving out candy too. I know I saw kids last night out trick-or-treating and their own houses were dark. In regards to the driving around, I agree, how lazy is that. In our neighborhood, everyone has their cars parked on the streets so the kids can walk up the driveways, but then you have the random people who are driving around following their kids. I mean come on, our neighborhood and our courts are not that big to where you can't just get out and walk your kid down the street.

We have a lot of trick or treaters here of all ages...literally 40 year old woman trick or treating alone.  It was a weird night. Not many homes gave out candy and if they did it was one candy per child.
My kids didnt get half a bag of candy they got maybe 1/4 of a bag. But it's okay they are to young for most the candy they only really care for lolly pops.

over the years I noticed the same thing too. I wonder if parents are not letting kids go trick or treating because of what appears to be increased crime with missing kids.

I was surprised at the lack of turnout too! Last year I bought only a couple bags of candy and ran out early in the night. So this year I bought 5 bags and barely made it thru my 2nd bag this year...  ??? Maybe it was the day, weather, who knows....
